One question we’re frequently asked is if a customer should pay for a repair or if they should consider having the whole system replaced. We typically recommend a heating repair in most situations as that tends to be the most cost effective option, but there’s actually a formula that is used as a general guideline to help homeowners know which path to take. Often called the “5,000 rule,” take the age of the unit, multiply that by the cost of the estimated repair, and if that number is greater than 5,000, it’s probably better to replace the unit. For example, if your 10 year old heating system needs $350 in work, 10 x 35 = 3500, so you’d just repair it. However, if your 15 year old unit needs $350 in work, 15 x 350 = 5250, so you may want to invest in a new system since the old one is nearing the end of its life expectancy.
Also, if your energy costs are high and getting worse each year, you may find investing in a more energy efficient model is better in the long run for your budget.
